What Are STIs?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can be passed between two people during sex—vaginal, anal, or oral. STIs are extremely common among teens. So it is important that you know the facts!

There are many types of STIs, which are passed between partners in different ways. Penetration is not required for infection. For example, genital herpes can be transmitted through skin-to-skin contact during an outbreak. HIV/AIDS, chlamydia, and gonorrhea can be passed through vaginal or anal sex. Most STIs show no symptoms. So you can never know if a person has one or not just by looking at them. The only way to know is to get tested. That’s why you can reduce your risk of getting an STI by practicing safe sex. Using a condom can protect you from most infections. Abstinence (not having sex) is the only way to avoid STIs completely. Wait until you’re ready and trust your partner before you have sex.
